Mental health is an often-overlooked health concern as it has few to no physical symptoms. But it has been proven that if you can manage your mental health then you are less likely to develop other issues, addiction for example.
This is why all the rehabilitation clinics on this site also treat mental health issues. They can treat conditions such as; depression, anxiety, burnout, stress and behavioural addictions.
Who Is Affected By Mental Health Issues?
Although mental health problems are discussed more often with younger generations anyone can be affected. With 25% of people experiencing some form of mental health problem each year in England. And 17% of people experience a common mental health problem a week.
It is important to remember that feeling negative emotions is ‘normal’. But it is when these feelings escalate and develop into a serious mental health problem.
What Mental Health Conditions Can Rehab Help With?
You do not need to have been previously diagnosed with a mental health condition to access treatment at a rehabilitation centre. But if you are researching treatment options you will be aware of the most common mental health disorders and may have speculated about your own diagnosis.
Below is a list of the most common mental health conditions that are treated in a rehabilitation facility:
- Anxiety and Panic Disorders – Anxiety is characterised by an excessive feeling of tension, worry and fear. Anxiety is a natural response to a threat but anxiety can become a problem when it begins to impact your everyday life and your ability to cope. When anxiety is particularly bad it can trigger panic attacks and panic disorders.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – Most people have an order or ritual around certain activities but it is considered compulsive when it is accompanied by negative, intrusive thoughts and emotions. A lot of people will describe themselves as OCD because they like to have a tidy house but that is just a preference and habit. True OCD is when someone has to perform a certain activity to alleviate negative emotions. For example, you have to close a door in a particular way or you believe something bad will happen to a loved one. OCD is usually treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Both are successful; it is purely down to the decision of each individual rehab centre.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – After a traumatic event you can develop PTSD. The symptoms of PTSD include; flashbacks, nightmares, feelings of anxiety and trouble sleeping. Like other mental health conditions, there are different types of PTSD that are triggered by different types of trauma. Delayed-onset PTSD is when the symptoms emerge more than 6 months after the initial trauma. Complex PTSD, often abbreviated to c-PTSD, develops when you experience trauma at a young age which then continues into your adulthood. Or after repeatedly experiences trauma, domestic violence for example.
